Both Walmart and Amazon made aggressive moves in June that show where their priorities are headed.

Walmart has consolidated its ad businesses from Walmart Connect and Sam’s Club under the same umbrella. Walmart Connect can now tie the identities it has from Sam’s Club into an ad business that just got more scale—an approximation of what gives Amazon so much power.

Amazon, meanwhile, is laying the groundwork in anticipation of an era where AI agents execute tasks on behalf of consumers. It’s already brought Rufus into the Alexa+ family. Now, it’s putting out more feelers to figure out how consumers will be interested in buying.
