TORONTO—Officials in Canada have long played down its role as a hub in the global trade of the
deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl. Canada was a bit player compared with China’s role as a supplier of the drug’s raw ingredients and Mexico’s as a manufacturer and trafficker, they said.
Suddenly, Canada’s role in the fentanyl global supply chain is a matter of urgent concern, in both the Canadian capital, Ottawa, and in Washington.
