Men’s personal care brand Dr. Squatch has called on Stranger Things character Murray Bauman, played by actor Brett Gelman, to expose what’s really lurking behind men’s shower curtains.
Dr. Squatch is the latest brand to collaborate with Netflix for the hit show’s fifth and final season.
Launching today (Dec. 5), Dr. Squatch’s campaign includes two ads in which Gelman calls out the “Big Soap” cover-up of harsh chemicals, synthetic ingredients, and decades of deception in men’s care products.
However, as he points out in classic Murray fashion, Dr. Squatch’s Stranger Things collection includes 98% natural, cold process soaps and aluminum-free deodorants.
Created by the agency Made You Feel and directed by Kyle Beiermeister, both ads recreate the look and feel of old-school 1980s advertising, complete with analog-style grainy imagery and outsize, flashing graphics.
John Ludeke, senior vice president of global marketing at Dr. Squatch, said getting the Stranger Things star on board for the campaign was the perfect meeting of minds.
“The Murray Bauman character is chaotic with a level of truth-seeking humor, which was the perfect way to dramatize the message we’ve been championing for years,” Ludeke said in a statement.
“Brett brought the same skepticism and curiosity we want guys to bring to their routines and the ingredients they’re putting on their skin. It’s a great reminder that what you use to get clean should actually be clean,” he continued.
