The Hamas-led attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, in southern Israel killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and around 250 were taken hostage to the Gaza Strip.
Israel responded with a military campaign aimed at
destroying Hamas and recovering the hostages. Hamas released over 100 of the hostages during a weeklong cease-fire in November 2023.
