Since then, he’s worked with Adult Swim several times, most recently on the Ambient Swim series—where his music actually came before animation even began.
“The producer said, ‘We want you to make something chill.’ That was the only direction that I was given,” Schimpf said, “which was kind of scary because it’s so vague, but also really exciting.” The resulting 24-minute soundtrack can be heard in the episode Vertex Land, created with animator Michael McAfee.
While his music is mostly electronic, Schimpf also does lo-fi work.
He made an album from recordings of walks with his rescue hound, Jack, called Music to Walk the Dog To. He’s also featured another family pet, Max the toy poodle, in other work.
After Jack passed last year, Schimpf and his wife adopted a beagle, Betsy, and “the wheels are spinning on how I can incorporate her into some of the music.”
