Mr. Clean’s “Cleaner of Your Dreams,” 2017
The “uncanny valley” refers to that creeped-out feeling you get from the dead eyes and rubbery expressions of figures generated by CGI. Case in point: the come-to-life Mr. Clean in this Super Bowl spot eight years ago. Unnerving as that face was, though, there was more to come. The true disquiet stemmed from the housewife who feels neglected enough to be seduced by the Chippendales-style booty-shaking of Mr. Clean as he thrusts his big… mop into that dirty, naughty floor. Sex sells, and we’re all accustomed to that. But sex with a cleaning cyborg? Cringe.
