Week of April 20 Cable News Ratings: Viewership After WHCD Incident

This is TVNewser’s basic cable network ranker and cable news report for the week of April 20, 2026.

Breaking news coverage of the alarming event at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday lifted cable news network numbers in total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo during primetime. Fox News was the only network with across-the-board week-to-week gains.

In addition, Fox News led the way in total viewers that Saturday evening, peaking at 10 p.m. ET with 5.57 million viewers. Meanwhile, CNN was the most-watched network in the demo during the 8 p.m. ET hour when the news broke with 173,000 viewers.

NETWORKS:

According to Nielsen big data + panel for the week of April 20, Fox News averaged 2.921 million total viewers and 279,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network was up +8% in total viewers and +13% in the demo compared to the week prior (the week beginning April 13). 

During total day viewing, Fox News averaged 1.734 million total viewers and 169,000 A25-54 viewers. Based on its average from the previous week’s measurements, the network grew by +1% in total viewers and +5% in the demo.

Fox News continued to rank first in total primetime viewership and was second in demo viewership among all basic cable networks. During total day, it finished first in total viewers and remained No. 2 in the total day demo.

MS NOW averaged 1.269 million total viewers and 136,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for the week that just concluded. The network saw gains of +4% in total viewers and +7% in the demo compared to its primetime average the week prior.

During total day, MS NOW averaged 730,000 total viewers and 79,000 demo viewers. It was flat in total viewers and was up +5% in the demo compared to the network’s average the week prior.

Among all basic cable networks, MS NOW slid from second to third in total primetime viewers and dropped one spot to 10th in the demo. It was also in third place in total viewers and seventh in the total day demo. 

CNN averaged 895,000 total primetime viewers and 143,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime for the week of April 20. The network registered +19% growth in total viewers and was up +8% in the demo compared to the previous week. 

During total day, the network had 580,000 total viewers and 83,000 viewers in the demo. CNN was up +6% in total viewers and was flat in the demo during this daypart.

Among all cable networks, CNN finished fourth in total viewers and remained in eighth in the demo during primetime. It dropped from the No. 3 spot to No. 4 in total day among total viewers and also slid from fifth to sixth in the demo.
