Amazon Locks Out Meta’s Muse in Agentic Shopping Standoff

Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com, escalating a fight between two of the biggest players in agentic commerce.

The problem, Amazon told ADWEEK, is that it was not made aware in advance that Muse would access its store, nor did the retailer authorize it.

People who try to shop on Amazon through Muse are now met with a popup: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”

The messages started appearing early this morning, according to users on X.

“We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate,” an Amazon spokesperson told ADWEEK in a statement.

“This helps ensure a safe, secure, and reliable customer experience, and it is how others operate including food delivery apps and the restaurants they take orders for, delivery services apps and the stores they shop from, and online travel agencies and the airlines they book tickets with for customers,” the spokesperson continued.

“Agentic third-party applications such as Muse have the same obligations, and we’ve requested that Meta remove Amazon from the experience.”

Meta did not respond to a request for comment. GeekWire first reported today that Muse users were encountering Amazon’s bot blocker.

The standoff is notable given how close the companies otherwise are. Amazon products have been purchasable inside Facebook and Instagram since 2024, and Meta signed a multibillion-dollar deal to use Amazon’s AI chips.

The incident also adds to the security concerns that have been raised following a string of company breaches by AI agents.
