Chase is welcoming the Halloween season with a comedic twist on Scream, bringing back original star Drew Barrymore.
The campaign’s release precedes the 30-year anniversary of the first Scream movie. In the ad, Barrymore receives a phone call, mirroring the famous opening scene of the 1996 film.
This time, however, the masked caller only has good news: that she had earned cash back with Chase Freedom, the financial company’s cash back credit card program.
Upon hearing the news, Barrymore is joined by the Scream villain Ghostface, this time played by Kevin Hart. Instead of ending in murder, though, the call concludes with a seasonal shopping spree, where the two enthuse about the cash back rewards.
“It felt right to go big with this one,” said Wittney Rachlin, general manager at Chase Freedom. “We’re also celebrating the addition of new benefits to the Freedom Flex card, so we need to make that impact.”
The campaign follows a recent Chase campaign with Hart, Stephen Curry, and A’ja Wilson, and a partnership with Julian Shapiro-Barnum. A Scream campaign not only comes at a time where viewers are rewatching the films, but also when Chase card users are beginning fall shopping and planning travel.
Chase is not the only brand tapping into 1990s nostalgia for its fall advertising. Dunkin’ recently released an ad featuring two of the Spice Girls to promote the return of pumpkin spice beverages.
’90s nostalgia has been on the rise in advertising, resonating with audiences who lived through the decade while offering younger viewers a taste of a pre-algorithm era.
