“Our task, from a marketing perspective, is more about being very surgical in being traffic cops and letting people know where and when to go for the matches that they care about,” he said.
Of course, one of Fox Sports’ biggest stunts may help with that challenge, as the company looks for the “Chief World Cup Watcher.”
The company partnered with Indeed and Fox One to find a diehard soccer fan to watch all 104 World Cup matches in a glass cube in New York’s Times Square, with that brave soul earning $50,000 for their trouble.
It’s a stunt that brings attention to all of the tournament matches, with Gottlieb calling it a “really fun activation.”
Gottlieb says the World Cup Watcher winner will be announced on Saturday, June 6, during Fox’s broadcast of the Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees game. He added that the glass cube will be unveiled on Tuesday, June 9.
Meanwhile, fans who aren’t in glass cubes can also watch all 104 matches through Fox Sports, with 70 on network television and 34 on FS1. The streaming service Fox One will also stream all matches throughout the tournament.
“We love it. We know the fans do, too,” Gottlieb said. “This is a party we all want to be a part of.”
